What H. Warner Munn is, is a story teller. If you read The Year’s Best Horror Stories anthologies, you recall his “The Black Captain” (in Series IV) and “The Well” (in Series V), and you know exactly what we mean. The first one is a taut suspense story and the second a whimsically told story of terror. “The De Pertriche Ring” is something else again. It’s just plain pure adventure.

The Crusades were a series of religious wars between Christians and Moslems in the Middle Ages. The purpose was to liberate the Holy Land from the people who lived there. It drained the coffers and population of Europe, made possible a degree of political treachery never before dreamed of by European monarchs, and if it had any salutary effects at all, it was in getting poor kings such as Richard the Lion Hearted, out of their countries so that more intelligent people could govern in their stead. The Crusades gave us some of the most beautiful chivalrous ideals, but they also culminated in one of the greatest waves of insanity ever to grip the world: the Children’s Crusade.

H. Warner Munn has given us a story about those times and the people who lived them, and ifs about as rousing a story as you’re likely to read this side of Dumas, Howard, Kipling or Robert Louis Stevenson.

Because, as we said, Munn is a born story teller. What amazes us about him is he’s so blasted versatile. He seems constantly to be coming up with new approaches to his writing. This story is nothing like “The Black Captain” or “The Well” or his novels Merlin’s Godson or Merlin’s Ring, except in one respect, Like them, it’s a damned good read.
